Course Description

This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credential-related course must adhere to the most current guidelines established by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) as applicable to this initial Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) course. This may include, but not be limited to, NC OEMS Education Institution approval, program director and instructor standards, classroom and distance education course approval, admissions requirements, course content, equipment standards, clinical and/or field requirements, and skills documentation. NC OEMS guidelines align with the rules of the NC Medical Care Commission and standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. For details, contact the Education and Credentialing Office of the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services, NC Department of Health and Human Services.

Prerequisites:

  • 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course;
  • High school diploma, high school equivalency, or adult high school diploma;
  • An active and unencumbered EMT Credential;
  • Successful completion of the Advanced EMT Candidate Entrance Assessment, including the CASAS assessment exam assessing both English and Math skills at a minimum of the post-secondary grade level; Candidates must complete the Entrance Assessment and submit all required prerequisite documentation during the scheduled course assessment session.

The Surry Community College Advanced EMT program (150808) holds a Letter of Review from the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This Letter of Review is not a CAAHEP accreditation status; it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated substantial compliance with the accreditation Standards and Guidelines, but it is not a guarantee of eventual accreditation. The program is making satisfactory progress in the accreditation process.
