Emergency Medical Technician Workforce Certificate

Course Description

The Emergency Medical Technician course establishes the basic knowledge needed to provide, under medical authority, prehospital emergency care and to pass the NC State and/or National Registry certification exam. This course follows the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The curriculum for the EMT educational program shall be the 2021, or the most current version of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT Course: National Standard Curriculum and the Supplemental Airway Modules for EMT-Basic: NSC.

Prerequisites:

  • High school diploma, high school equivalency, or adult high school diploma; or successful completion of the CASAS assessment exam for basic reading comprehension skills at the 11th grade level.
  • All candidates will complete the CASAS Assessment during the program’s Entrance Assessment and Orientation session.

This workforce certificate is offered to high school students through the Career and College Promise (CCP) Program.

Course Learning Outcomes

Emergency Medical Technician students will:

  • Acquire basic life support knowledge through a combination of classroom instruction, practical laboratory exercises, and clinical experience with EMS Agencies
  • Achieve a thorough understanding of the legal, moral, and ethical aspects of emergency care
  • Develop understanding and knowledge of human anatomy and physiology
  • Be able to deal calmly and efficiently with childbirth, injuries, poisonings, and other medical emergencies such as heart disorders, strokes, and diabetes
  • Be able to provide basic life support for seriously/critically ill patients

Employment Opportunities

Upon completion of this course, individuals should be able to apply for positions with an EMS agency and in medical facilities.
