Course Description
This Emergency Medical Services (EMS) credential-related course must adhere to the most current guidelines established by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) as applicable to this initial Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) course. This may include, but not be limited to, OEMS Education Institution approval, program director and instructor standards, classroom and distance education course approval, admissions requirements, course content, equipment standards, clinical and/or field requirements, and skills documentation. OEMS guidelines align with the rules of the NC Medical Care Commission and standards of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Prerequisites: NC EMT or NREMT. Must be 17 years of age by the end of the course. Successful completion of the CASAS assessment exam assessing basic reading comprehension, language skills, and math skills at a minimum at the post-secondary grade level.
Course Learning Outcomes
Advanced Emergency Medical Technician students will:
- Acquire knowledge of EMS systems; workforce safety; medical, legal, and ethical issues, communication and medical terminology; the human body, and lifespan development
- Perform patient assessment and treatments related to airway; pharmacology; vascular access; medical administration; shock; and medical respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurologic emergencies
- Assess and treat GI/GU emergencies, hematologic emergencies, immunologic issues; toxicological, psychiatric, and gynecologic emergencies; and trauma, bleeding, and soft tissue injuries
- Address face, neck, head, spine, chest, abdominal, GU, and orthopedic injuries in all patients including OB, neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric and all situations including environmental and incident management
- Be able to deal calmly and efficiently with patients with special challenges, handle transport operations, and address rescue and hazardous situations
Employment Opportunities
Upon completion of this course, individuals should be able to apply for positions with an EMS agency and in a hospital.
Instructional Format
Hybrid: face-to-face and online class meetings, with face-to-face clinicals, labs, and observations.
