Emergency Vehicle Driver Workforce Certificate

Course Description

This course is designed to train individuals with the knowledge and skills to operate ambulances throughout the state. Students are instructed in Basic Life Support skills including the use of AED to assist Emergency Medical technicians in the field. This is an entry-level course for state certification. This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The curriculum for the MR educational program shall be the 1995 United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) First Responder Course: National Standard Curriculum. Prerequisites: High school diploma or general education development (GED); or successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum tenth grade level.

Course Learning Outcomes

Emergency Medical Responder students will:

  • Develop skills in patient assessment
  • Acquire knowledge of patient vital signs
  • Develop skills in airway management and CPR
  • Learn splinting and hemorrhage control

Employment Opportunities

Upon completion of this course, individuals will be able to volunteer with a fire department or rescue squad to assist with medical calls.
