Course Description

The Truck Driver Training program prepares individuals to drive tractor-trailer rigs. This course teaches proper driving procedures, safe driver responsibility, commercial motor vehicle laws and regulations, and the basic principles and practices for operating commercial vehicles. Upon successful completion, students are qualified to take the Commercial Driver’s License exam and may become employable by commercial trucking firms or become owner-operators and work as private contract haulers. This program is also offered at the Yadkin Center.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR) as they apply to Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMV’s).
  • Demonstrate sufficient knowledge of map reading, trip planning, computational skills and proper cargo handling.
  • Demonstrate the basic skills necessary to operate a CMV skillfully and safely on the driving range.
  • Demonstrate basic driving skills required to operate a CMV safely and defensively on the highway while obeying all traffic laws.
  • Show their accumulated knowledge of basic CMV operations.
  • Exhibit sufficient knowledge of FMCSR as they pertain to the operation of a CMV while he demonstrates the driving skills required to operate a CMV safely and defensively to obtain a class A CDL.
  • Demonstrate communication skills that include the abilities to read, comprehend, and analyze information; and to express ideas effectively through written and oral communications.
  • Apply critical thinking strategies to think logically and solve problems using analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.
  • Use computational skills to become sufficiently numerate to function as a member of society.
  • Demonstrate technology skills including accessing and evaluating information, as well as communicating using technology.

Employment Opportunities

Graduates should qualify for employment for a variety of truck driving positions within the transportation industry.

Instructional Format

Highway driving training exercises and classroom lectures are used to develop the student’s knowledge and skills.
