Repeating Courses and Course Substitutes Policy


REPEATING CURRICULCUM COURSES

Students may repeat a course for credit or audit only once if they have made a grade of “C” or higher or have previously audited the course within a five-year period. Students who do not successfully complete a course with a grade of “C” or better may repeat it as many times as necessary to be successful. When courses are repeated, the highest earned grade and hours will be computed in the cumulative grade point average. The first course (grade and hours) will be shown on the transcript and will not be included in the cumulative grade point calculations.

Repeating a course may have implications for students receiving financial aid and/or Veterans benefits, and students should consult these offices to determine if repeating a course has a financial impact.

Students planning to transfer should note that the receiving institution may re-compute grade point averages and could include all grades in their calculations for admission decisions. 

REPEATING WORKFORCE, TECHNOLOGIES, AND COMMUNITY EDUCATION (WTCE) COURSES

Students may enroll in WTCE education courses as many times as necessary to accomplish their individual educational/training goals provided they continue to show progress, do not prohibit others from participating, are willing to pay fees, and do not violate North Carolina Community College System policy. WTCE programs/courses are designed to enable participants to progress, at their individual achievement rates, in gaining knowledge and skills in specific educational areas. 

COURSE SUBSTITUTIONS

When it is determined to be in the best interest of the student’s declared educational objective, appropriate courses may be substituted for other courses for graduation purposes. SCC programs of study are reviewed regularly and represent the outcomes required for student success; therefore, substitutions should be rare.

Circumstances in which a substitution could be made include, but are not limited to, the following:

•    A required course is canceled. 

•    A program of study is changed.

•    A comparable course is taken at another institution.

Substitutions will not be granted because of a student’s failure to enroll in a required course. In addition, the following guidelines apply:

  1. No more than 15% of the total credit hours required in a degree, diploma or certificate program may be substituted.
  2. Substitutions of core courses are discouraged.
  3. Courses must have comparable learning outcomes and contact hours.
  4. General education requirements are not substituted (for example, a Humanities requirement cannot be met with a Social Science course).
  5. A student must earn a “C” or better in the course that is being substituted.
  6. If the substituted course is from another college or university, it must be regionally accredited.

 

Students should complete substitution requests prior to enrolling in the course that they wish to substitute. In the event that students are seeking substitutions for courses previously taken (for example, when students change their program of study), the form should be routed as early as possible to avoid potential graduation delays if the substitutions are disapproved. Substitution requests will typically not be granted in the student’s last semester, and students should not assume that approval is inevitable.
