Auditing Courses Policy

Any individual wishing to attend a curriculum course without receiving formal credit may audit a course based on the following:

  1. The individual pays the normal tuition and fees. However, any person who is at least 65 years old may audit curriculum tuition free. To be eligible for free tuition for audit of curriculum classes, the individual must meet the following criteria and provide documentation for verification:
  1. Be 65 years of age or older;
  2. Provide proof of age through a driver’s license, state identification card, or other government-issued document.
  1. Auditing students do not take tests or examinations, they do not receive grades, credit or financial aid, and cannot later change the “audit” to credit. An audit grade will not be included as hours attempted or hours earned, and it will not be considered in the calculation of grade point average (GPA). Financial aid and veteran’s benefits do not cover audited courses.
  2. Students auditing a course must meet the same course prerequisite and attendance standards as all other students in the course. Auditing a course will not meet the prerequisite of any sequential or higher-level course.
  3. Auditing is subject to open seats in the course and a student who audits a course shall not displace other students seeking to enroll in the course.
  4. Instructors may request of the Chief Academic Officer that an auditor be officially removed from the course if the auditor is interfering with the learning process.

Under this provision, senior citizens are required to complete an application for admission prior to registering for classes.

Students are allowed to audit classes only on a space-available basis and for reasons acceptable to the appropriate academic division chair. Permission from the appropriate division chair/instructor is required prior to registration and before the 10% point of the course. A final grade of audit “AU” or “SR” (for senior citizens) will be assigned upon registration and will show up on the student’s transcript.

*Under this provision, senior citizens are responsible for applicable self-supporting or local fees.
