Adverse Weather and Emergency Closings Procedure

During situations such as natural disasters, emergencies and/or inclement weather, the President (or designee) has the discretion to alter the College’s operating schedule as needed. The President (or designee) shall take steps necessary to deal with the situation and notify College employees.

  1. Loss of Instructional Time
If the College announces a delay, classes will begin at the time of opening. Students need go to their normally scheduled class at the time of opening. For example, if a student has a regularly scheduled course that meets from 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. and the College is on a two-hour delay (College opening at 10:00 a.m.), then the student will attend their 9:30 course at 10:00 when the College opens. The student will then follow their regular schedule of classes for the remainder of the day.

Classes that are missed during the time of delay or closure will need to find an alternative way of making up the loss of instructional time. However, if the College misses more than fifteen percent (15%) of total instructional time, then the College may make calendar and schedule adjustments to make up the loss of instructional time.

For Early College High School (ECHS) and Career & College Promise (CCP) students:
    1. CCP and ECHS students are expected to follow the same class attendance schedule as all other SCC students. Only under the following conditions will the College deviate from this policy.
      1. If the public schools closed early due to threatening weather conditions, CCP and ECHS students will be sent home at the same time as their high school counter parts.
      2. If the College remains open after the public schools have closed, those CCP and ECHS students will not be required to come to the College to attend classes.
    2. Students will be allowed to make up missed work without penalty. The instructors will still record the students’ absences on the roster; however, these absences should not be counted toward the instructors’ maximum number of allowed absences. Students should be encouraged to save any excused absences given by college instructors for this kind of situation.

Since geographic areas and conditions vary in our service area, it is imperative that all students use good judgment, and they should avoid driving in dangerous conditions.

If the College or a learning center is closed or delayed, all events for the College or at the learning center will also be cancelled or delayed.
