Certificate Description
This four-month Medical Billing and Coding Certificate course prepares students for entry-level healthcare billing and coding positions. Additional information: https://surry.edu/areas-of-study/workforce-training/allied-health.
Program Learning Outcomes
Medical Billing and Coding students will:
- Be proficient using medical terminology and vocabulary unique to the medical profession.
- Understand various classification methods for coding patient information needed for insurance reimbursement and patient medical history.
- Be able to identify and examine the five major health insurance carriers.
- Be able to complete claim forms for each of the major health insurance carriers.
- Be able to code medical services and diagnoses using ICD, CPT, HCPCS coding books with correct definition, spelling, and pronunciation of body systems.
Upon completion of this course, individuals should be able to apply for positions in hospital billing departments, physician practices, and insurance companies.
Instructional Format
Hybrid. Some face-to-face class meetings as well as online instruction.
